Dark Eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) - birds at our feeders
These birds are common visitors at bird feeders. Adults have dark grey to black coloured heads and sides with white outer tail feathers and undersides. They forage for food on the ground or from lower branches. Diet consists of seeds, fruits, insects and spiders Wintering habitats include grassy areas such as fields, lake shores and lawns. They young can run before they fly. Nesting is on or close to they ground. Nests can be found in such places as beneath rocky ledges, mud banks, fallen logs or weeds. Coniferous forests with dense under story are ideal breeding areas. Ranging across southern Canada to Northern Mexico they form flocks outside of the breeding season. Their call has a musical sound.
